I’m 6 months pregnant and am starting to get weird bluish-purple veins on my legs. What are these and why am I getting them?
– Tyneesha

Varicose veins are a common, usually harmless part of pregnancy for some women. They happen when the uterus applies pressure to the large vein (the inferior vena cava) that carries blood back to the heart from your feet and legs.

Varicose veins can become itchy, uncomfortable, or even painful. They're usually found in the legs, genital area, and rectum (hemorrhoids are just a type of varicose veins).

Varicose veins tend to be hereditary — your mother or grandmother may have gotten them during pregnancy, too. So, unfortunately, there's not much you can do to prevent them.

But here are some ways to reduce varicose vein pain and avoid making the veins worse:

  • Take frequent breaks and move around as much as possible if you have to stand or sit for a while.
  • Don't cross your legs when sitting.
  • Elevate your feet often.
  • Wear maternity support hose. These special pantyhose gently compress the leg muscles and squeeze the veins to help push the blood back toward the heart. They differ from regular pantyhose because they apply gradual amounts of pressure to the leg, with the most compression at the ankle and less farther up the leg. It's important to avoid tight socks or knee-highs that squeeze at a particular spot on the leg, as this can cut off circulation.
  • Get daily low-impact exercise if your doctor says it's OK.
  • Sleep on your left side to keep the pressure off of the inferior vena cava, which is on the right side of your body.

If you notice that the veins feel hard, warm, or painful, or the skin over them looks red, call your doctor.

Varicose veins often get better after delivery, when the uterus is no longer pushing on the inferior vena cava.

Apparel Attire

Compression pantyhose are a specialized hosiery designed to help prevent the occurrence of, and guard against further progression of, venous disorders such as edema, phlebitis and thrombosis. Compression stockings are elastic compression garments worn around the leg, compressing the limb.

Material

Opaque: The term “opaque stockings” is used to describe hosiery that tends to be non-translucentOpaque stockings are usually about 50 deniers or higher in weight, thus achieving its thick appearance. Opaque stockings can be made from a variety of material, including nylon. Opaque stockings combine outstanding functionality with an especially soft and pleasant feel. Their refined opacity discreetly hides blemishes while effective moisture management and ease of donning support everyday comfort. As you might imagine, a sheer is going to be a bit more breathable than an opaque stocking. An opaque is wonderful for cooler months when you want the extra warmth. An opaque stocking will effectively hide very pronounced varicosities or unwanted sunspots, while the sheer will cover your legs, but still mildly expose your skin.

This strong, surgical weight compression socks gives you the graduated compression doctors recommend, especially for lymphedema patients.

Compression: 20-30 mmhg (Firm Support)

If wearing a lower compression doesn’t seem to be minimizing the swelling in your legs enough, higher-grade (or medical-grade) compression may be more effective. Usually, people who suffer from swelling can benefit from 20-30 mmHg socks. These can help them alleviate symptoms of moderate to severe edema and varicose veins. Compression stockings 20-30 mmHg may also help after surgery on the advice of a doctor and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) from sitting for too long. They are specially formulated to relieve pain in the legs and calves, venous ulcers, edema and other diseases of the lower extremities. The 20-30 mmHg compression stockings from Discount Surgical Stockings have medical-grade standards and beautiful designs that are designed to fit any aesthetic. These socks can help reduce swelling, relieve leg pain, and prevent venous ulcers. These socks are recommended for people with mild to moderate conditions. The range of 20-30 mmHg compression socks features many styles that can match any wardrobe or personal style.

At 5 months pregnant and planning a trip that will require me to do some flying, my OB recommended I get full compression stockings for the the airplane ride. I ordered the Absolute Support™ Compression Maternity Stockings -Firm Support 20-30mm and they are GREAT! I'm 5'6" and about 198lbs at 5 months pregnant with baby #2. The stockings are thick yet breathable! I love that you feel immediate support and relief - the compression is firm but not restricting. The material reminds me of an ace bandaged BUT you can comfortable layer under yoga pants (as I do for work) or maternity jeans. I originally purchased these for an upcoming trip but began wearing them under my work uniform for a trial run. I'm an esthetician (part-time) and working 8-9hr days can really get my legs to swell up. The first time I wore my compression stockings under the work pants, I felt immediate relief, no discomfort throughout the day (except having to do the typical stocking/panty-hose adjustment pull around the crouch) and had minimal to no swelling at the end of the day! The fabric is breathable! Did NOT make me sweat! They can be a little tricky to get on at first, but you just have to work in small sections to pull them up! I ordered based on my current weight, so I say they are true to size with a little extra room in the toes/heel/crouch areas. I also think it all depends on how your body is shaped. I would say I'm thick & curvy, 5'6", 5 months pregnant, 198lb
